Here's A List Of Suspended Ceiling Installation Options

Quite simply, a suspended or drop ceiling is a secondary ceiling that is tailor-made to fit underneath your original ceiling using a metal grid with panels that are attached to your ceiling joists. Often times these panels are transparent to create a luminescence from the ceiling above. Suspended ceilings tend to have an industrial look to them; for this reason some people may prefer other ceiling options, however, drop ceilings are far more economical and much easier to mount.

Although suspended ceilings (drop ceilings) were initially intended to mask the unsightly floor overhead, they also do a fabulous job of improving the acoustic balance and control in a room. To better absorb noise, Sound Attenuation Batts (SABs / "sound batts") are positioned over the panels to help quiet the sounds from adjoining rooms.

There are many different types of suspended ceiling installations to choose from; below is a list to help you in your selection:

Concealed Suspended Ceilings

True to its name, the concealed suspended ceiling or drop ceiling blocks all suspension parts from view. Two kinds of this type of ceiling are available; one kind allows access to the above area, making it easy to maintain; while the other kind does not allow this. This will need to be considered before installation.

Exposed Suspended Ceilings

Construction of this type of ceiling incorporates a grid which houses the drop ceiling panels, and comes in a choice of designs, depending on the size & style of the tiles you choose. An extremely positive aspect of this type of ceiling is the fact that it’s easily & quickly installed. So, if you need the job done fast, this ceiling is perfect. This option also provides easy access to the plenum space (where maintenance is done).

Free Span Suspended Ceiling

You need to consider your requirements before going with this type of ceiling. These are tiled with planks, and can be spanned as much as 2500mm; making them perfect for corridors. They can be closed off to not allow access for maintenance, or dismantled for easy accessibility to the space above.

Bandraster Grid System

A great suspended ceiling system, the Bandraster Grid follows the design of the building; whether round or otherwise, the grid tiles follow the buildings natural curves. A horizontal brace is constructed against the actual ceilings’ structure, to prevent vibrations and lateral movement. This bracing is formed with a choice of sections: concealed or exposed. One allows easy maintenance access to the plenum space, while the other prevents this access.

Most panel materials can be easily cut to allow incandescent lighting systems, fire sprinklers and speakers to fit; however, there are some lighting fixtures available to fit into the same space as a panel, for easy installation.

If you’ve decided to install a suspended ceiling by yourself, you should be aware that this can become difficult at times because of awkward angles and having to work on ladders. If you’re not able to do it by yourself, you should seek the help of a professional.
